Mikael Pernfors is best known for reaching his first and only Grand Slam final at the French Open in 1986, just a year after turning professional, where he ultimately was defeated by Ivan Lendl. He has a strong record on the grass at London reaching the Wimbledon 4th Round twice and won his first top-level singles title in Los Angeles after defeating Andre Agassi in the final. He was the recipient of the ATP Tour’s Most Improved Player award in 1986, and its Comeback Player of the Year award in 1993. He is an entertaining player, known for the variety in his game and his regular use of the drop shot and topspin lob.
