López finished three years in the top 20 (2011, 2014-15), nine straight years in the top 50 (2007-15) and achieved a career-high of World No. 12 in March 2015. He has appeared in more consecutive majors that anyone other than Roger Federer, dating back to the 2002 French Open. In 2005, López was the first male Spanish player to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon since 1972, when Manuel Orantes reached the semi-finals.

Lopez is known for his powerful serve, consistency from the baseline and confident net play. Unlike most Spanish players, who almost always prefer clay courts due to the popularity of the surface in their country, Lopez is an exceptionally strong grass-court player, with three quarterfinal runs at Wimbledon, as well as a title on grass at the Aegon International in 2013, which he successfully defended in 2014.
